The secret to ageing well? Staying strong

One of the biggest myths I come across is that slowing down is simply part of ageing.

People often tell me they’re not as strong as they used to be, they’re more achy than they used to be, or that their mind feels a lot younger than their body. Many just assume that’s what happens as we get older.

While our bodies do change with age, many of the issues we associate with ageing are related to becoming less active and losing strength and muscle mass over time.

The good news is that there’s plenty we can do to maintain our strength, mobility and independence as we get older.

Why strength matters as we age

Strength is one of the biggest factors in maintaining your independence, mobility and quality of life. It helps maintain bone density, keeps your muscles and joints strong and mobile, and gives you confidence that your body can handle the activities you love to do.

Whether it’s playing golf, travelling, playing with the grandkids or simply managing everyday activities, being stronger can make life easier and help you keep doing the things you enjoy.

Why cardio alone isn’t enough

Walking, cycling and swimming are all great for cardiovascular health, but they don’t replace appropriately challenging strength training, which plays an important role in maintaining muscle strength and bone density.

This is why strength training is such an important part of ageing well. By keeping our muscles strong and giving our bodies a reason to stay active, we can help maintain our physical capabilities as we get older.

Strength training doesn’t have to be intimidating

The good news is that strength training doesn’t have to be intimidating. You don’t need to be a gym junkie, lift massive weights or train every day. Just 2–3 sessions a week can go a long way towards helping you maintain your strength and mobility.

The key is finding an approach that suits your individual needs, abilities and goals.

Introducing the Easy Ageing strength training program

Through the Easy Ageing strength training program at Muscle Freedom, I work with adults in their 60s and beyond who want to stay active and continue living life on their terms.

We’re not chasing unrealistic expectations or trying to turn everyone into a gym enthusiast. Instead, the focus is on building a solid foundation of strength and mobility so you can continue doing the things you love without second-guessing your body.

Ageing well is partly about luck and genetics, but it’s also about continuing to invest in yourself. People who remain active and capable well into their 70s and beyond usually aren’t just lucky. They’ve continued to give their bodies a reason to stay strong.

Your best years don’t have to be behind you. With the right approach, there’s no reason they can’t still be ahead of you.

Easy Ageing: strength training for life

Muscle Freedom’s Easy Ageing program is designed to help you build strength, maintain mobility and stay active and independent as you get older.

Sessions are tailored to your individual needs and goals, using gym equipment at Muscle Freedom. While suitable for adults of all ages, the program is particularly popular with people aged 60 and over who want to maintain their strength, confidence and quality of life.

Depending on your needs, a session may include a brief consultation, remedial massage therapy and a personalised strength training program designed to help you move better, feel stronger and keep doing the things you love.
